Here is a list of wards and units that treat young patients at Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick.  

Wards, or units, are for patients staying overnight or longer. Some wards care for a range of patients but many of them cater to children with specific disease or conditions.

Coming to Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick

Ambulatory Care Unit

The Ambulatory Care Unit is our ambulatory service and specialises in outpatient and day-stay care.

The services included are our:

  • Acute Review Clinic (ARC)
  • Hospital in the Home (HITH)
  • Medical Day Unit (MDU)

Care is provided pre- and post-operatively for a variety of procedures including general and specialty surgery, radiology, dermatology, dental and endoscopy.

Acute Review Clinic (ARC)

The Acute Review Clinic facilitates reviews, investigations and treatment for patients who were recently discharged from the Emergency Department or from hospital wards. We are also able to provide reviews for children with chronic and complex conditions, aiming to avoid a hospital admission or emergency department presentation.

Hospital in the Home (HITH)

Hospital in the Home facilitates hospital level care at home for children and provides an alternative to a hospital stay and an opportunity for earlier discharge home. Common treatments HITH can provide include:

  • Short term intravenous antibiotics: for community acquired pneumonias, urinary tract infections, limb cellulitis, periorbital cellulitis and other infections
  • Longer term intravenous antibiotics: for children with central line access
  • Eczema care and management in the home
  • Transition to home support for patients with chronic and complex health needs  

Medical Day Unit (MDU)

Medical Day Unit is for children who need regular specialist treatment in a day stay space. Children may receive treatments such as medical infusions or procedures. Oral or inhaled sedation may be used to assist with procedures.

Capacity: 23 beds
 

Cellular and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit

The Cellular and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit provides ongoing support to children and young people with cancer and blood disorders.

We are part of the Kids Cancer Centre at the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.

Blood product transfusions are administered here, as well as apheresis- including stem cells, is provided in the day unit.

Procedures such as lumbar punctures and bone marrow aspirates are performed on the ward and central venous access care and blood tests are carried out in the day unit as well as follow up care and treatment for children after bone marrow transplant.

Children’s Outpatients Department

The Children’s Outpatients Department (COPD) is a dedicated ward for providing specialised care for children and young people with various acute and chronic conditions.

Specialised clinics perform assessments and educate families on disease management and medication administration.

Clinical Research Centre

The Clinical Research Centre (CRC) provides an opportunity to participate in research studies in a safe, family-friendly environment. They complement our established clinical and research groups that conduct clinical trials, including cancer and neurology groups, hospital departments that integrate clinical trials in their service.

They are part of Kids Research, the research arm for the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network.

Day Oncology Unit

The Day Oncology Unit is a 24/7 dedicated inpatient unit to supporting children and families through the challenging journey of cancer and or blood disorder treatment.

We are part of the Kids Cancer Centre at the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.

Capacity: 20 beds, 8 isolation rooms

Emergency Department

The Emergency Department (ED) is our emergency facility providing 24/7 care to children and young people presenting with serious illness or injury.

Haematology and Oncology Unit

The Haematology and Oncology Unit provides care to children and young people with cancer and blood disorders.

We are part of the Kids Cancer Centre at the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.

Children attend to have short and long chemotherapy regimens (up to 8 hours).

Intensive Care Unit

The Intensive Care Unit provides care to critically ill newborns, infants, children and young people with complex medical and surgical needs.

Medical Short Stay Unit

The Medical Short Stay Unit specialises in caring for babies/newborns, children and young people with a variety of medical conditions, including asthma, bronchiolitis, gastroenteritis, sepsis and oncology patients requiring isolation.

Capacity: 24 beds

Medical/Surgical and Adolescent Unit

The Medical/Surgical and Adolescent Unit specialises in care for medical, surgical, mental health and chronic/complex health conditions in adolescents aged 12 and 18 years.

Medical/Surgical and Infant Unit

The Medical/Surgical and Infant Unit specialises in care for newborns and children, with a focus on heart, kidney, and babies/newborn surgical conditions.

Capacity: 16 beds

Mental Health Unit

The Mental Health Unit, also known as the Children’s Acute Mental Health (CAMH) or Saunder’s Unit, is our mental health ward and specialises in acute inpatient care to young people aged 12-18 years experiencing mental health issues.

We provide specialist inpatient assessment, diagnostic, and therapeutic services catered to the young person's unique needs and facilitated within a safe environment.

  • Monday to Friday, 4:30pm - 8:00pm
  • Saturday and Sunday, 10:00am - 8:00pm

Neurosciences and Rehabilitation Unit

The Neurosciences and Rehabilitation Unit specialises in care to children and young people with a wide range of neurological and neurosurgical conditions, including brain tumours and epilepsy.

The unit provides an orthopaedic service and a brain injury rehabilitation program. Recent refurbishment to the ward has meant we provide a safe room to nurse children with head injuries. We also house a specialised epilepsy service.

Capacity: 16 beds

Recovery Unit

The Recovery Unit, also known as Paediatric Recovery, provides care for children and young people recovering from general anaesthesia.

Location: level 1, next to our operating theatres

Capacity: 9 beds

Short Stay Surgical Unit

The Short Stay Surgical Unit provides surgical care to children and young people.

It’s made up of:

  • Pre-admission: admission of elective and non-elective surgical patients requiring a general anaesthetic
  • Day stay: monitoring and observing patients for same day surgery
  • Overnight ward: caring for short stay surgical patients

Location: level 1

Capacity: 20 beds

There is also a dedicated area in Prince of Wales Hospital every Monday for children undergoing urology and gastroenterology procedures.

Resources:

Sleep Unit

The Sleep Unit specialises in providing diagnostic and therapeutic care to children with sleep disturbances.

Children are admitted in the afternoon and are discharged the following morning on completion of the study with nurses responsible for meeting all the patient's needs including setting up for the study, monitoring overnight and reporting on the study.
